30 minute calzone

recipe

A super quick and incredibly delicious dinner recipe that you can make in a pinch. Comfort food in 30 minutes. Have you ever made homemade pizza or calzone? If so, then you know how much work the dough is! Today we are simplifying the traditional calzone and using puff pastry instead of yeast dough. This will substantially shorten the baking time, keep your kitchen mess free and provide you with a delicious dinner in about 30 minutes! Despite this little shortcut, the calzone has an amazing flavor, especially if you make your own marinara sauce. The incredibly crispy and light puff pastry (topped with a generous amount of cheese of course) satisfies any pizza craving. I am almost too embarrassed to tell you how this recipe came to be. But since I value my readers and want to share everything with you (even the stuff that makes me look bad and might cause you to question my skills as a cook) I will tell you. First up, you have to know that I take pride in being a good cook with a quite a few years of experience in cooking and baking. This is what I am good in and confident in. (Otherwise I wouldn't be here blabbing about the melting temperatures of different types of chocolate and explaining what a leavening agent is...you know the everyday stuff people need to know ;)). But the first time I made this calzone was a pure accident. This was never supposed to be a calzone! It all started with some puff pastry dough and the wish to make pizza pin wheels (which are a regular in our household). I was filling it with my pizza feelings fillings and everything was working great. Then when it came to rolling it up, my brain shut off entirely. So I stood there absentmindedly, rolling the dough widthwise as opposed to lengthwise. Before I even knew what I was doing the dough was rolled up into a giant big blob. I still debated whether or not I could maybe cut it into slices only to come to the conclusion that I had utterly failed at making pin wheels. But failure is not a word we use here on HBB so instead I took the Tatin sisters as my example and played it cool. I closed up the sides and sprinkled some cheese over it, making a calzone out of it. When my husband came home and tasted it he immediately loved it. And I simply said, "Glad you like it". The lesson we learn from that: keep calm and bake on like the Tatin sisters. Now let's take a look at how to make this. The recipe is extremely easy and can almost be explained with pictures entirely. See here: Roll out your puff pastry dough and spread the marinara sauce on top. I used about a cup of marinara sauce for my dough. Add toppings of your choice. I kept it incredibly simple with just tomatoes, corn and cheese but you can add whatever you wish. Keep in mind to only add a thin layer otherwise rolling it up becomes quite a challenge! Roll roll roll. Make sure to roll the dough (widthwise) as tightly as possible. Crimp the sides together to prevent your filling from oozing out while baking. Use a fork to make a nice pattern. Then brush with an egg wash. (This will give it that beautiful golden color.) Sprinkle with cheese and bake! It's literally as simple as that. My last tip to you is to let it cool a bit before slicing. Otherwise your slices will look a bit messy. But they'll still taste great, so no worries ;) SaveSave SaveSave
